Mission Trails is a local park that is
convenient to ride after work or in the evenings after a hot day. There are
really two sides of the park separated by North and South Fortuna Mountains (As
much of a mountain as we have in San Diego anyway). You can get from the west
side of the mountains to the east side by taking the appropriate trail(s) but no
matter which trail you take there is a serious amount of hiking involved. For
this reason, we mostly ride on the West side of the park and combine several
different trails into a ride that we've started calling "The Quick Loop".
We call it that because it's not that long (anywhere from 8-12 miles depending
on the variation you do) and it can be done in as little as an hour and fifteen
minutes. However, even though this ride is short, it is definitely not easy.
All the climbs and descents are short and steep so there isn't a lot of time for
recovery. Once you drop down one canyon you immediately head back up the other
side. This process repeats itself for almost the entire ride so this ride is
definitely a workout.
Due to the parks proximity to civilization, this trail also makes an excellent
night ride.
